Located near Rittenhouse Square in downtown Philadelphia, this 1,000 sf urban garden uses hardscape to repeat the fabric of the city and the mid-century modern architecture: the bluestone floor in the living room extends seamlessly outdoors; the playful placement of windows in the living room wall is echoed in the garage elevations. The garage that juts into the garden does not belong to the client. To mitigate its presence, the roof was modified to reduce its massing. A wooden ‘skin’ wrapping the garage becomes a privacy fence. Brightly colored glass panels are backlit to light the night garden.
